  • English Language Arts Newsletter

Students at our school will embark on literary journeys that delve into profound questions and themes.  Please see the attached ELA Newsletter at the bottom of this post for more information!

Here’s a sneak peek at what’s in store for each grade:

6th Grade: Through an Animal's Eyes

In Unit Four, 6th graders will venture into the world of animals through literature. With Sara Pennypacker's novel Pax as their guide, students will reflect on the essential question: "What can you learn from seeing the world through an animal's eyes?" From thought- provoking poems to discussions on wild animals as pets, this unit promises to spark empathy and curiosity in young minds.

    7th Grade: Inspired by Nature

For 7th graders, Unit Four invites students to explore their relationship with nature in depth. With Roland Smith's Peak leading the way, students will contemplate the meaning of harmony with nature. Poetic works by Pablo Neruda and Mary Oliver will further enrich their understanding as they think about the beauty and mysteries of the natural world.

8th Grade: The Fight for Freedom

In Unit Four, 8th graders will explore the timeless question of freedom and its significance in society. Harper Lee's classic, To Kill A Mockingbird, will serve as a poignant study of courage and justice. From Frederick Douglass's powerful narrative to stirring poems by Walt Whitman and Marilyn Nelson, students will examine the complexities of freedom and the sacrifices it demands.

Welcome Leroy!

IS 187 Has a Therapy Dog!

Please welcome Leroy, IS 187's New Therapy Dog!

Best Practices for a School Therapy Dog Team

A team is the handler and their own personal dog they have trained as a therapy dog to volunteer with them as their teammate.

A priority for a volunteer therapy dog team is being an advocate for their dog, considering every possible safety precaution, fire exit, fire drill procedures, stairs, where to take their dog out for a needed break, busy hallways, noise levels, bringing their dog’s necessary items, courtesy for people who may not like dogs…

  1. Share with families that a New York Therapy Animals therapy dog team has been invited into their child’s school for a specific program. Parental consent forms may be needed depending on the school protocol. A template consent example to be edited accordingly will be provided.

  1. Therapy dogs have been trained and tested for health, safety, appropriate skills and temperament.

  1. Therapy dogs are never off leash and the handler may never ever hand over the leash to anyone even if they need to use the bathroom facilities.

  1. The team will be advised of the school room destination with an escort to and from inside the building to their destination.

  1. Our therapy dog team will bring their STATE ID to check in with security.

  1. A good reminder is to let the therapy dog adjust to the environment first before letting people start petting them. A dog’s instinct is to sniff out the room first.

  1. It is a good rule to walk with the therapy dog against the wall when in a hallway.

  1. Students may come across the therapy dog team in transit to and from their destination. It is important that the handler does not allow children to touch their dog. The handler does not know if the student is permitted to pet a dog, has allergies, or if the parent/guardian has signed the school consent form. The handler can say that are working and that is the school rule.

  1. We ask that students and faculty respect the boundaries of the therapy dog and not rush up to them, giving them space to not feel overcrowded or backed into a corner.

  1. As a considerate interaction we ask that everyone pet the therapy dog one at a time.

  1. Our humane education program teaches children to ask 2 questions to the handler before approaching a dog: “Is your dog friendly? May I pet your dog?”

  1. No food or drinks during the visit. The handler will bring their own treats and water for their dog. Treats are discretionary.

  1. Questions, comments, suggestions, updates can be addressed to Nancy George-Michalson, Director of New York Therapy Animals Nancy@NewYorkTherapyAnimals.org 212 535-2211
